New short soon online…
I’ve been busy working on a 3D animation (short) the past months, together with 3 classmates (Edwin Schaap, Jeroen Hoolmans, Floyd Angenent). We’ve been working day and night and after some setbacks we made it within 3-4 months. The short will be online soon, we still have to do some polishing here and there. to check out our progress from concept to the final product check out http://unoxteam.blogspot.com/
Working on this short made me realize that Lighting, Rendering, Effects and Environments are really an interesting part of process. I still have lots of research and exploring to do, but I already start moving more and more towards the Technical Direction. Hopefully the internship at House of Secrets will clear things up!

Here is an list with links I think are very inspirational and filled with useful information regarding 3D, animation, VFX, etc. (if the link doesn’t work, just open google en search for bookmarks, at google bookmarks type in the search box “Art and Animation by Chroma” and you’ll find my list with links.
Result Seminar Fusion and more…
For this last (3rd) Seminar, about the Maya -> Fusion workflow and compositing, i modeled these objects and made them shatter. My goal was to create something believable and let it shatter. I did some research and ended up with ‘PullDownIt’ for the simulation and ‘axCrack’ (mel) script for cracking the objects into pieces.
I started with shooting some simple footage with my Zx1 (it’s like an mobilephone camera) and imported this in PFtrack. I used PFtrack to position the base grid and exported it to Maya. I faked a HDRI image by shooting a normal photo of a reflecting ball and adjust the exposure manualy in Photoshop and converted it in HDRShop.
There where some difficulties in Geo caching these object, but luckily PullDownIt has is own Geo cache system(methods), so it turned out OK.
Because of the two previous weeks where more about compositing in Nuke, I had to figure out how to do it in Fusion. I still haven’t decided which program to go with in the future, they (Nuke and Fusion) both have their own advantages.

(screenshot Fusion – I divided it in two parts (shots) so that’s why half of the nodes you see are not connected)
Result Seminar : Lighting and Rendering + W.I.P. (3rd)
Second Seminar week, all about lighting and rendering + third seminar compositing in Fusion (W.I.P).
I’m Animating and rendering this scene for third seminar so it can be composite in Fusion.
Result seminar 1
Here the final result of scene I’ve made during the first seminar. After i upped it on YouTube, it somehow became a little bit darker. But i’m OK with the final result. I’ve learned a few basic features of Nuke and loving it already. I will continue working with it in the future. During the seminar we also got nice tips on how to render some different render passes(layers) in Maya.
Nuke – screenshot project with the different render passes, color correction nodes, nodes, etc. etc.
Seminar 1 Nuke and Maya linear workflow
The first seminar is : linear workflow from Maya and compositing in Nuke (Jeroen Ritsema).
I learned a lot this week about linear workflow, rendering and Nuke. Now to put everything together in my own project. For this i made this Hand Eye and animated it in Maya. Now I’m compositing it in Nuke. The final version will be at higher resolution.
Here some images / renders :
3D short Animation with Mocap
Mocap-class – Recorded mocap footage at University of Utrecht. Made with Motion Builder and Maya. Tweaked some basic shaders and used mental ray and contours.
3d motion tracking
3D motion tracking. Compositing ,Robot modeling, rigging and animated in Maya (rendering done with MR 8 render passes), Tracking and camera solving done in PFtrack. Compositing in After Effects. Footage shot with Kodak Zx1 and HDRI made with a Canon EOS 40D. I’m still not sadisfied with the results, specially the animation, but then agian, it’s the first time doing this.
